Powered Access and MEWP basics: what equipment is used for work at height?
A beginner’s guide to powered access, MEWPs and the main types used to lift people, tools and materials for temporary work at height.

Powered access is the broad term for equipment designed to raise people, tools and sometimes materials so temporary work can be carried out at height. IPAF identifies Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) as one of the most common powered-access categories. Common types include mobile vertical machines such as scissor lifts and mast lifts, plus mobile boom machines such as articulated and telescopic booms. The right choice depends on working height, outreach, obstacles, floor conditions, indoor or outdoor use, and the task being performed. Operators and supervisors should be properly trained and the equipment must be selected for the job.
